'Burn Out' takes ten minutes to reach the boil, double bass under electric piano while the drums push a little harder with every pass. 'Man With The Movie Camera' is the sprint. Bass, piano and breakbeat drums at full tilt, soprano sax cutting straight through. 'All Things To All Men' is the centrepiece, a gravel-voiced rapper riding sweeping strings for eleven minutes. About the album.
Every Day is the second studio album from The Cinematic Orchestra, a nu jazz and downtempo landmark that fuses a live jazz band with the cut-and-loop instincts of electronic production. Ninja Tune released it in May 2002, three years after the debut Motion. It was written by Jason Swinscoe and Phil France, produced by Swinscoe with France co-producing four tracks, and recorded largely at Blows Yard Studios in London. Soul singer Fontella Bass, best known for her 1965 hit 'Rescue Me', sings on 'All That You Give' and 'Evolution', her vocals recorded in her home city of St. Louis. Roots Manuva delivers an eleven-minute performance on 'All Things To All Men'. The band includes drummer Luke Flowers, harpist Rhodri Davies, saxophonist Tom Chant and turntablist Patrick Carpenter, and Gilles Peterson wrote the liner notes. The album grew alongside a live score Swinscoe was commissioned to write for Dziga Vertov's 1929 silent film Man With A Movie Camera, first performed in Porto. Some of its pieces began life in that score, and the film's day-in-the-life structure gave Every Day its title. In 2010, it received a gold award from IMPALA, marking sales of at least 100,000 copies across Europe. This 20th Anniversary Edition, released in 2023, spreads the seven original tracks across three LPs. Sides E and F add four bonus tracks: 'Oregon', 'Horizon', 'Semblance' and the original version of 'Flite'. The band's later album To Believe followed in 2019. It remains a natural starting point for anyone drawn to Bonobo or the wider Ninja Tune catalogue.
