Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (Vinyl LP)
Black Vinyl • Printed Inner Sleeve With Lyrics • Cut At Bonati Mastering
'Death With Dignity' opens on fingerpicked guitar and a voice barely above a breath. That's the whole palette, and it rarely widens. 'Should Have Known Better' holds the line for half its length, then quiet synths lift in underneath. 'Fourth Of July' sinks to soft keys and a whisper, repeating itself into the dark. 'John My Beloved' is piano and hush, so close you can hear the room. 'Blue Bucket Of Gold' closes with the song dissolving into a long, humming drone.

About the album.
Carrie & Lowell is the seventh studio album from American songwriter Sufjan Stevens, a sparse indie folk record first released on Asthmatic Kitty in March 2015. Coming five years after the electronic sprawl of The Age Of Adz, it strips his sound back to acoustic guitar, piano and close, hushed vocals.
The album is named after his late mother, Carrie, who died in 2012, and his stepfather, Lowell Brams, who co-founded Asthmatic Kitty with him. Its songs return to childhood summers in Oregon and turn over grief, memory and faith with a directness that sets it apart from the state-by-state storytelling of Illinois.
Stevens produced it with Thomas Bartlett, recording through 2014 in studios across the US and even in hotel rooms, with Laura Veirs, Sean Carey and Casey Foubert among the players. Pat Dillett and Bartlett mixed it alongside Stevens, and Josh Bonati mastered the record and cut the lacquers for this pressing. 'No Shade In The Shadow Of The Cross', 'Should Have Known Better' and the title track were released as singles, and critics widely ranked it among his very best work.
If Illinois is your way in, this is its quieter counterpart, and the two make a natural pair.
