'Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois' opens on piano and a near-whispered vocal, two soft voices trailing just behind. Then 'Come On! Feel The Illinoise!' tips everything sideways, odd-metered piano, strings and backing voices all pulling at once. 'John Wayne Gacy, Jr.' strips back to acoustic guitar and a hush you have to lean in to hear. 'Chicago' is the one people come for, strings and choir driving it forward in long, bright strides. 'Casimir Pulaski Day' turns quiet again, banjo carrying the ache. 'The Tallest Man, The Broadest Shoulders' swells for seven minutes behind a full choir. Huge, then tiny, then huge again.

About the album.

Released in 2005 on Asthmatic Kitty, Illinoise is a 22-track suite inspired by the state of Illinois. Blending folk, chamber pop and symphonic arrangements, Sufjan Stevens delivered one of the most ambitious independent releases of the 2000s.

The album moves between hushed confessionals and expansive ensemble pieces, incorporating strings, brass and layered instrumentation while maintaining narrative focus. Tracks such as “Chicago” and “Casimir Pulaski Day” balance sweeping arrangements with intimate songwriting.

Rather than functioning as a novelty concept record, Illinoise stands as a landmark in modern indie — expansive in vision yet meticulous in execution.

Pressed on 2LP black vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve.
