'Butterflies' opens on clean, chiming guitar and a voice already worn at the edges. Then 'Leader of the Pack' kicks the door in, all fuzz and swagger, and burns out on a long, ragged solo. British guitar music with the grunge left in. 'Purple' is the slow one that isn't: hushed verses, then a chorus that lands like a dropped amp. 'Teal' is the centre of gravity, heavy and patient, building without ever rushing. 'Morphine', the longest track here, takes its time and gets heavier for it. 'Epilogue' brings everything down to almost nothing. A debut that sounds lived in.

About the album.

Cub is the debut album from Wunderhorse, an alternative rock record that pulls grunge weight and indie rock melody into eleven songs written entirely by Jacob Slater. Slater had fronted the London punk band Dead Pretties, who split in 2017, before relocating to Cornwall, taking up surfing and slowly building a more introspective body of songs. He has described Cub as his life so far set to music, tracing a line from his teenage years to the present, and the record draws openly on Radiohead and Neil Young. Produced by Kevin Jones and Peter Woodin, the album was released on Communion on 7 October 2022. It carries the singles 'Teal', 'Purple' and 'Leader of the Pack', while 'Girl Behind the Glass' later returned as a reworked single version shaped by how the band had been playing it on stage. Cub was named among the best albums of 2022 by NME, Far Out and Riot. Around its release, Wunderhorse supported Sam Fender and Foals and toured the US and Europe with Fontaines D.C. at that band's invitation, and follow-up album Midas arrived in August 2024. This edition presents Cub on crystal clear vinyl, with the full eleven-track running order across two sides.
