Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes opens on Wurlitzer, a slow dub bassline and a vocal barely above a breath. Facing East brings in hammered santur and never lets the tempo climb. Dub is the floor, and everything else gets layered on top. Omid runs tabla under a hushed, drifting vocal. Meu Destino heads to Brazil on bossa guitar. The title track is all horns and a dancehall toast. Liberation Front is the heaviest thing here, guitars and brass pushing hard. Resolution lets a harp run over the last drum break and fades out there.

About the album.

The Richest Man In Babylon is the third studio album from Thievery Corporation, the Washington, D.C. duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, and a downtempo electronic record that sits at the centre of their catalogue. First released in 2002 on their own ESL Music, it was recorded at ESL Studios between December 2000 and August 2002 and produced by Garza and Hilton.

The album builds on the sound of 2000's The Mirror Conspiracy, with dub as its foundation and bossa nova, trip hop, reggae and jazz layered over the top. Indian and Persian instrumentation runs throughout: Max Sadeghi's santur on Facing East, Sonny Caberwal's tabla on Omid (Hope), and Ustad Amir's sitar on Un Simple Histoire (A Simple Story). A sharper political edge comes through on Liberation Front and The State Of The Union.

The guest cast is broad. Emilíana Torrini opens the record and returns on Until The Morning, and Pam Bricker sings on Facing East and All That We Perceive. LouLou Ghelichkhani appears on Omid (Hope) and Un Simple Histoire, and Patrick De Santos leads the Brazilian Meu Destino (My Destiny). The reggae vocalists are Ras Pidow on The Outernationalist, Notch on the title track, and Shinehead and Sleepy Wonder on The State Of The Union. The album was mastered by Howie Weinberg.

This 2025 reissue on Primary Wave Music presents The Richest Man In Babylon as a double LP in a gatefold sleeve.
