Angels opens on a single guitar figure and a voice with almost nothing around either of them. Chained sets the two vocals against each other, one always half a step behind the other. Steel drums surface through Reunion, the brightest sound anywhere on the record. Sunset runs on a bassline and a kick that leave most of the bar empty. Missing stops dead in the middle and restarts on a drum pattern that arrives far too loud for what came before it. Our Song closes with the two voices finally singing the same line at the same time.

About the album.

Coexist is the second album by The xx, an indie and electronic record released on Young Turks in September 2012 and the follow-up to their Mercury Prize-winning debut. Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith recorded and mixed it at Our Studio in London between November 2011 and May 2012, with additional mixing at XL Studios. It is sparser than the debut, built around trading vocals, single guitar lines, and long stretches of silence, with house and garage rhythms pulled in from Jamie Smith's production work. Chained samples The Crusaders' Lilies Of The Nile. Mandy Parnell mastered the album at Black Saloon Studios, and it reached number one in the UK.
