About the album.

Best... I is the first of two indie rock compilations that gathered The Smiths' essential recordings after Warner acquired the band's back catalogue in early 1992. Released in August that year, it was the first regular best of ever assembled from their material, and it went to number one on the UK Albums Chart.

The fourteen tracks mix singles, B-sides and album cuts recorded between 1983 and 1987, drawing on everything from the debut The Smiths through The Queen Is Dead to Strangeways, Here We Come. 'This Charming Man', 'What Difference Does It Make?' and 'Hand in Glove' represent the early run, while 'Half a Person', 'Rubber Ring' and 'Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want' show just how strong their B-sides were.

The release also pushed the band back into the singles chart. A reissue of 'This Charming Man' reached number 8, the highest position any Smiths single had achieved, and an edited 'How Soon Is Now?' followed at number 16. The compilation carries the full uncut version.

The UK sleeve uses the left half of Dennis Hopper's 1961 photograph Biker Couple, with ...Best II completing the image. This Warner reissue returns the collection to black vinyl as a single LP.

For anyone starting out with The Smiths, it is the natural entry point, and ...Best II, released later in 1992, picks up where it leaves off.
