Fake Empire opens on a piano figure that refuses to line up with the drums underneath it and stays out of step until the horns come in to end the song. Mistaken For Strangers lands straight after, taut snare and a guitar line wound tight enough to snap. Squalor Victoria builds for a minute and then turns into flat hammering, the best two minutes of drumming the band has put on a record. Green Gloves drops the volume to almost nothing and holds it there. Apartment Story is the one that moves, brushed and quick, the only real lift on the album. Racing Like A Pro sits on one arpeggio and lets the vocal go low and level across it, which is where this band actually lives. Gospel closes on brass and a fade that takes its time going.

About the album.
Boxer is the fourth studio album by American indie rock band The National, released on 22 May 2007 by Beggars Banquet. It followed Alligator (2005) and marked the point when the band traded that record's nervous energy for something slower and more arranged, built on piano, brass, and Bryan Devendorf's drum patterns rather than guitar attack. Peter Katis produced the album with the band, with additional arrangements by Aaron and Bryce Dessner. Twelve songs run just under forty-three minutes, including Fake Empire, Mistaken For Strangers, Apartment Story and Slow Show. Boxer entered the Billboard 200 at number 68 and has since become the record most often named as the band's best. It was followed by High Violet in 2010.
