Durian opens on flugelhorn and soprano sax laid across a looped drum break, live playing and sampling doing the same job from the first bar. Ode To The Big Sea brings hand percussion up under the horns and gives them room to stretch. Night Of The Iguana takes all of side B to itself, thirteen minutes of double bass and slow accumulation, and it earns every one of them. Channel 1 Suite is the one people know, built on a break heavy enough to carry five minutes on its own. BlueBirds sets piano against alto sax and keeps the tempo low. Diabolus goes darkest, nine and a half minutes with the bass pushed right to the front, and it is the best thing on the second record. Kalima closes on vibraphone and soprano sax, eight tracks across four sides with a whole side given over to one piece.

About the album.
Motion is the debut album by The Cinematic Orchestra, a jazz record assembled through sampling and re-editing, released on 27 September 1999 by Ninja Tune. Jason Swinscoe built it from a collection of drum patterns, basslines and melodic samples he had gathered, handing them to a group of musicians to learn and improvise around, then taking those recordings back to the computer and reshaping them into finished tracks. Tom Chant plays saxophones and keys; Jamie Coleman, trumpet and flugelhorn; Phil France, bass; T. Daniel Howard, drums; Alex James, piano; and Saidi Kanba, percussion. They recorded it at Blows Yard Studios and mastered it at The Soundmasters with Voda. Eight tracks run to just over fifty minutes, including Channel 1 Suite and the thirteen-minute Night Of The Iguana. The Cinematic Orchestra followed it with Every Day in 2002.
