Surprise Chef - Education & Recreation (Vinyl LP)
Black Vinyl • Standard Edition • Cut At Masterdisk
No vocals, no hurry. 'A1 Bakery Pledge Of Allegiance' sets the tone, a patient groove with keys and guitar trading short phrases over the bass. 'Velodrome' kicks harder, chunky drums and a synth hook you'll hum for days, flute floating over the top. 'Suburban Breeze' is barely two minutes of flute and soft keys. 'Iconoclasts' is all about the space between notes, the band dropping out as often as it plays. Vibraphone shimmers across the whole set, part film score, part crate-digger's break. 'Goldie's Lullaby' closes it gently, the quietest thing on the record.

About the album.
Education & Recreation is the third album from Melbourne instrumental soul and funk band Surprise Chef, and their first for Big Crown Records, released in October 2022. The quintet formed in 2017, and the move to Big Crown put them on the same roster as the soul and funk records that shaped them from the start.
The band is Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keys and vibraphone, Carl Lindeberg on bass, Andrew Congues on drums and Hudson Whitlock on vibraphone and percussion, with Erica Tucceri adding flute to 'Velodrome', 'Suburban Breeze' and 'Conversation Piece'. Henry Jenkins produced the record, recorded through the band's own College Of Knowledge Records.
Their sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz and the samples at the root of hip hop, built on mood, space and vivid arrangements rather than vocals. 'Velodrome' pairs chunky drums with a synth hook straight out of a breaks compilation, while 'Iconoclasts' shows their feel for space. The band describe the album as a synthesis of how they live and make music together, which is where the title comes from.
This is the standard black vinyl edition, with lacquers cut at Masterdisk.
