Squid - Bright Green Field (Vinyl 2LP)
Double LP
'Resolution Square' is under a minute of scene-setting noise before 'G.S.K.' lurches in on a heavy bassline and a yelped vocal. Squid build tension like a machine. 'Narrator' runs past eight minutes, the motorik groove locking tighter while a second voice climbs into screams. 'Paddling' opens on drum-machine hi-hats, then live drums take over at a quicker clip. Brass drifts through 'Documentary Filmmaker', and the middle of the record breathes. 'Pamphlets' closes it: eight minutes of pounding repetition that refuses to let go.

About the album.
Bright Green Field is the debut studio album from Squid, the Brighton-formed five-piece whose post-punk sound pulls in krautrock rhythm, brass and art-rock ambition. Warp Records released it on 7 May 2021. It was recorded in 2020 at producer Dan Carey's London studio, reuniting the band with Carey after he produced their 2019 Town Centre EP for his Speedy Wunderground label. Carey produced and mixed the album, which runs to almost 55 minutes across eleven tracks. Frontman and drummer Ollie Judge has described it as an imagined cityscape, darker and more rooted in place than the character-driven songs of their earlier releases. Guest players widen the palette. Trumpeter Emma-Jean Thackray, alto saxophonist Lewis Evans and trombonist Charlie Keen form a horn section on several tracks, a string trio appears on 'G.S.K.' and '2010', and Martha Skye Murphy adds vocals to 'Narrator'. The singles 'Narrator', 'Paddling' and 'Pamphlets' came out ahead of the album, which debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart. The cover image comes from Kyoto University research into reconstructing pictures from human brain activity. This Warp pressing spreads the album across two LPs and four sides, a natural fit beside black midi, Black Country, New Road and Fontaines D.C.
