About the album.
Released in 2009 on Matador Records, The Eternal marked Sonic Youth’s first studio album following their departure from a major label. With Mark Ibold joining on bass and producer John Agnello returning, the record draws from multiple eras of the band’s history.
Across twelve tracks, the album revisits the angular experimentation of their early work while maintaining the compositional focus developed through the 1990s and 2000s. Songs such as “Sacred Trickster” and “Anti-Orgasm” continue the band’s long-standing interplay between distortion and structure.
Rather than operating as a retrospective, The Eternal stands as a confident late-period statement.
