About the album.

The Official Fiction is the fourth studio album from Melbourne alternative rock band Something For Kate, first released on Murmur in August 2003 and reissued here for its 20th anniversary on blue vinyl with white marbling. It debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and went on to platinum sales. Paul Dempsey on guitar and vocals, Stephanie Ashworth on bass and Clint Hyndman on drums co-produced the record with Trina Shoemaker, who also recorded and mixed it, with sessions at Mangrove Studios on the New South Wales Central Coast. Eric Gorfain arranged the strings on 'Kaplan/Thornhill' and 'Deja Vú', sharing the latter with Dempsey, while Lisa Germano, Caitlin Cary and Grant Lee Phillips add backing vocals across the record. 'Deja Vú' was the lead single and reached the ARIA top 20, followed by 'Song For A Sleepwalker' and 'Moving Right Along'. Cello and violin run through several tracks, pulling the band's guitar rock towards the balladry of indie rock. This anniversary edition comes with updated artwork featuring select new images and handwritten lyrics. For more Something For Kate, Echolalia (2001) came before it, made at the same studio with the same producer, and Desert Lights (2006) followed it to number one.
