About the album.
Regurgitator had a perfectly good rock band and decided to dismantle it. Unit is the sound of three people from Brisbane deciding that guitars were optional, that drum machines and cheap synth presets were funnier and better, and that the fastest way to make a point about pop music was to make an extremely good pop record. The opening track is called "I Like Your Old Stuff Better Than Your New Stuff". They knew exactly what they were doing.
Recorded across the middle of 1997 at The Dirty Room in Brisbane with Magoo, it swings between bubblegum synth-pop, punk-speed alternative rock and something close to hip-hop, often inside the same three minutes. "Polyester Girl" is pure late-90s plastic sheen. "Black Bugs" is barely three minutes and gone. "Just Another Beautiful Story" closes the record on a string arrangement, a straight face and no punchline. Thirteen tracks, thirty-six minutes, almost nothing wasted.
Released in November 1997 on EastWest, it reached No. 4 on the ARIA chart, went triple platinum, and took five ARIA Awards in 1998 including Album of the Year. This is the Valve Records vinyl reissue, remastered for vinyl by Dom McGlinn and pressed on 180g at Zenith in Melbourne.
