About the album.
Released in 2013 on Erased Tapes Records, Spaces is one of Nils Frahm’s defining works. Built from live recordings captured across different locations, the album blurs the line between modern classical, ambient, electronic and improvised performance. Rather than presenting a polished studio document, Frahm keeps the human details intact: the movement of the room, the tension of the performance and the atmosphere around the notes.
The result is a deeply textural record that moves from intimate piano pieces to larger, more hypnotic electronic passages. Tracks like “Says” and “Hammers” show the range of Frahm’s world, where restraint and momentum sit side by side. It is music that rewards proper listening, late-night volume and a little space around it.
