Take Me Somewhere Nice follows with an actual sung vocal over strings and stays quiet the whole way through. O I Sleep is two minutes of the heavy stuff and then gone. You Don't Know Jesus takes six and a half minutes to build and makes the best case for this being their most controlled album. Robot Chant runs a treated voice over almost nothing at all. 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong stretches past nine minutes on banjo and strings before the guitars arrive over the top of them. Secret Pint ends it quiet, piano and slide guitar and one last note left hanging.

About the album.

Rock Action is the third studio album by Glasgow rock band Mogwai, released in 2001 by PIAS and Southpaw Recordings. It is their shortest record and the one where the loud-quiet-loud formula is pulled apart, with strings, banjo, electronics, and more sung vocals than on anything before it. The band recorded and mixed at Tarbox Rd Studios in New York, with additional sessions at Cava Studios in Glasgow and Sorcerer Sound in New York. Guests across the album include David Pajo on Take Me Somewhere Nice, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals on Dial: Revenge and Robot Chant, and Gary Lightbody on Robot Chant. Eight tracks run to under forty minutes. This 2023 PIAS edition is pressed on transparent red vinyl and comes with a fold-out colour booklet.
