About the album.

Mezzanine is the third album from Bristol’s Massive Attack, and the record that pushed their trip hop into darker, heavier territory. It was released in April 1998 on Circa and Virgin. It trades the warmer soul and dub textures of Blue Lines and Protection for distorted guitar, brooding bass and dense, claustrophobic production.

The album was recorded at Massive Attack’s own studio and at Christchurch Studios in Bristol, then mixed at Olympic Studios. Horace Andy sings on ‘Angel’ and ‘Man Next Door’. Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins sings on ‘Teardrop’, ‘Black Milk’ and ‘Group Four’. ‘Risingson’ is built around a sample of The Velvet Underground’s ‘I Found a Reason’.

Four singles came from the album: ‘Risingson’, ‘Teardrop’, ‘Angel’ and ‘Inertia Creeps’. Together they carried the band’s darker sound well beyond the underground.

This edition presents the album across two 180-gram LPs. The final side pairs ‘Group Four’ with ‘(Exchange)’, a reworked return to the earlier instrumental ‘Exchange’.

For anyone who knows Portishead’s self-titled second album, Mezzanine is its natural companion. They are two Bristol records from the same era, and both turn trip hop colder and more unsettling.
