'Blackoak' opens on strings and a rolling break, and the sound arrives fully formed. 'Otherside' pulls a soft, close vocal into the centre of it. 'All I Need' is the pivot, a skittering, glitchy beat under a warm lead vocal, with bright guitar and the hazy shimmer of an omnichord drifting overhead. 'Bloom' lets a guitar line open out slowly before the drums start throwing in fills that nod back to early rave. Everything sits warm, close and slightly blurred at the edges. The record moves between dancefloor and comedown without a hard cut. Last light, long shadows.

About the album.

Hallucinating Love is the third album from Maribou State, a warm downtempo electronic record released by Ninja Tune on 31 January 2025.

Maribou State are Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, friends since their teens in Hertfordshire. Their debut Portraits arrived in 2015, followed by Kingdoms In Colour in 2018, both released through Counter Records. Hallucinating Love is their first album in more than six years.

The label frames the record around togetherness, and much of it took shape on writing retreats in the countryside. The pair wrote, produced and mixed it themselves. Long-time collaborator Holly Walker sings on two tracks, with further vocals from Andreya Triana, Gaidaa and North Downs. Mastering is by Matt Colton.

This edition is pressed on recycled black vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve with a printed inner.

If Maribou State's blend of live instrumentation and electronic warmth is your thing, Bonobo is the natural next record to reach for.
