Khruangbin - Mordechai (Vinyl LP)
Gatefold Sleeve • Includes Download Card • Single LP
Bass leads, round and mid-heavy, carrying the tune while everything else decorates. Guitar answers in clean single notes, reverb long and shallow. Drums brush past on the hats, kick soft and dry. Voices arrive close to the mic, half spoken, doubled and low in the mix. Congas and cowbell keep a loose Latin lean under the groove. Pedal steel bends across two bars and disappears. Everything sits mid-tempo with air around it.

About the album.
Mordechai is the third studio album by Khruangbin, the Houston trio of Laura Lee Ochoa on bass, Mark Speer on guitar and Donald "DJ" Johnson on drums. It was recorded at The Farm in Burton, Texas and at Terminal C, and produced by the band with Steve Christensen, who also recorded and mixed it. Where their earlier albums were largely instrumental, this one has all three of them singing across almost every track, in English for the most part, with French on "Connaissais De Face" and Spanish on "Pelota". It was led by three singles, "Time (You and I)" in April 2020, "So We Won't Forget" in May and "Pelota" in June. Speer and Ochoa wrote the lyrics, and Ochoa also did the artwork and design. Guests fill out the edges, with Will Van Horn on pedal steel, Charlie Perez on congas, bongos, timbales and assorted percussion, Cleo "Pookie" Sample on Minimoog and Hammond organ, Chase Jordan on vibraphone and John Adams on rototoms. Dead Oceans released it on 26 June 2020 in association with Night Time Stories.
