'Neon St' opens under a smear of Auto-Tune and glowing synths. Holy Holy stop sounding like a guitar band almost immediately. 'Pretend To Be' tilts toward the dancefloor. 'Messed Up' sets a husky guest vocal against a falsetto that barely touches the ground. 'Two Minds, Two Days, Two Mornings' drops the tempo to a lo-fi hip hop crawl. 'People Change' snaps back into wiry guitar pop. 'Ready' runs on bright, pulsing synths. And then 'Heroes', simple keys giving way to an electric guitar riff in the bridge.

About the album.

Cellophane is the fifth studio album from Australian indie rock duo Holy Holy, released on 22 September 2023 through Wonderlick and Sony Music. Timothy Carroll and Oscar Dawson built it with the doors open, describing the band at the time as a kind of songwriting factory, and more than half of its thirteen tracks carry a guest vocalist. Medhanit appears on opener 'Neon St', Tasman Keith on 'This Time', Perth singer Darcie Haven on 'Heroes', Kwame on lead single 'Messed Up', Tia Carys on 'Two Minds, Two Days, Two Mornings', Tasmanian duo Sumner on 'Ready' and Many Voices Speak on the closing title track. The record moves between electronic pop, club rhythms, hip hop and folk, with Carroll's falsetto and Dawson's guitar holding it together. Carroll and Dawson produced the album, with additional production from Kwame and Sumner, and Dawson handled mixing and recording across every track. Ryan Strathie plays drums on most of the record, and Leon Zervos mastered it. Cellophane peaked at number 4 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was nominated for Australian Album of the Year at the 2023 J Awards. This pressing is the limited edition Royal Blue vinyl, one of four colour variants issued in Australia.
