Clock Catcher opens on a smear of harp and pitched-up voice before the drums arrive already broken. Pickled! sets a live bassline against programmed hits that keep landing a fraction early. Zodiac Shit is the still point of side one, a slow chord loop with almost nothing percussive under it. Elsewhere the seams are left showing, tracks running into each other mid-phrase with no attempt to smooth the join. Arkestry brings in a saxophone and lets it play across the beat rather than with it. Do The Astral Plane opens side three on strings and a four-four kick, the closest the record comes to a straight dance track. Galaxy In Janaki ends it on strings stretched until they stop sounding like strings.

About the album.
Cosmogramma is Flying Lotus's third album, an electronic record released on Warp in May 2010 that pulls jazz, hip hop and abstract beat music into a single continuous piece. Steven Ellison built it in the period following his mother's death, and the album is threaded with references to his family's musical lineage, including his great-aunt Alice Coltrane. Seventeen tracks run without pause across four sides, with live bass, harp, strings and saxophone recorded alongside the programming. It features contributions from Thundercat, Ravi Coltrane and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, who sings on ...And The World Laughs With You. The album was widely acclaimed on release and is regarded as a defining record of the Los Angeles beat scene. This pressing comes in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves and artwork by Leigh J. McCloskey.
