About the album.
Mere Mortals is the first full-length ballet score from Floating Points, the British composer, producer and DJ Sam Shepherd. It sets modern classical orchestration against electronic production. It was recorded with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and released on Deutsche Grammophon in August 2026.
The ballet was commissioned and directed by Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of San Francisco Ballet. Aszure Barton choreographed it, and Hamill Industries handled design and visuals. It premiered in San Francisco in 2024. It retells the Greek myth of Pandora and uses it to explore artificial intelligence and the line between human and machine.
Shepherd produced the recording and performs alongside the orchestra. The score runs across fourteen movements. They range from the brief solo violin of ‘Hope’ to the long, slow build of ‘Falling to Earth’, which was released as a single ahead of the album, and on to the harp melody at the centre of ‘Her Gift’.
This edition presents the music across three sides of black vinyl. The fourth side carries an etching and no audio.
For listeners who found Floating Points through Promises, his 2021 album with Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, Mere Mortals is the natural next step. It pushes the meeting of orchestra and electronics further, this time in the service of dance.
