About the album.

Surface, Echo & Sound is an alternative rock and indie rock record released in October 2026, the eighth studio album from Birmingham band Editors. It follows 2022's EBM, made with electronic producer Benjamin John Power under his Blanck Mass name, and marks a deliberate turn away from the studio-built approach of the band's three previous records. The band regrouped in summer 2025, wanting something more natural, closer to their earliest days working through songs face to face in a practice room in Stafford. Sessions took place in rural Gloucestershire near frontman Tom Smith's home, and Smith has described it as a productive summer spent on a modest industrial estate in the greenest part of the county, roughly the opposite of playing Berghain. Smith wrote the material using the stripped-back, acoustic-led method he used on his 2025 solo album There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light, bringing songs to the band to play together and following where they led. Guitarist Justin Lockey recorded and produced the album. Mandolin runs through it as a structural element rather than a folk gesture, with Lockey noting that many of the rhythms come from the mandolin and acoustic guitar as much as from the drums. The lead single, Call It In, arrived in April 2026, followed by The Rush in June, which Smith describes as an imagined bar scene between two people talking through the highs and lows of a life, and which came with a video directed by Henry Ehara and filmed in Tokyo. This pressing is on yellow and green transparent vinyl in a 3mm spined sleeve with a printed card inner carrying the lyrics and full-colour on-body labels.
