About the album.
Ulterior Motives gathers early demos and live radio sessions from Dirty Three, the Australian instrumental rock trio of Warren Ellis on violin, Mick Turner on guitar and Jim White on drums. First issued in 2012 as a limited CD sold only at the band's shows, the collection now arrives as a red and green double LP via Touch and Go.
Every recording here comes from the band's formative years. Four of them, 'Sue's Last Ride', 'The Last Night', 'Everything Is Fucked' and 'Indian Love Song', were captured live in the trio's small rehearsal room before the self-titled Dirty Three album was released, with the songs still being worked out on the spot.
'Better Go Home Now' was taped live at triple j's Sydney studios in 1994, not long after that album came out, by which point nonstop gigging had sharpened the band and pushed its volume well up.
The closing 'Deep Waters' was recorded at Mick Turner's house after the trio returned from their first overseas tour. It's an early sketch of a piece that would later become part of Ocean Songs, the band's 1998 album for Touch and Go.
For anyone who already knows Ocean Songs or 2024's Love Changes Everything, this is the unpolished ground those records grew from, and a direct line into the improvised, instrumental end of post-rock.
