Dirty Three - Cinder
2LP • Gatefold Sleeve
Cinder feels like Dirty Three caught in small flashes. Less sprawl. More space. Warren Ellis’ violin still burns and bends, but the songs leave more air around it. Mick Turner’s guitar moves in weathered lines. Jim White’s drums never just keep time. They lean, scatter and pull the whole thing sideways. It is loose, but never careless. Post-rock, folk, country dust and late-night ache, cut into shorter shapes. A record that smoulders rather than erupts.

About the album.
Originally released on 11 October 2005, Cinder is an album by Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three. The record was released through Touch and Go Records, with Bella Union also associated with its UK release.
Conceived on Phillip Island and recorded in Melbourne in 2005, Cinder marked a more concise shift for the band, with 19 shorter pieces rather than the longer, sprawling compositions often associated with their earlier work. The album features Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White expanding the Dirty Three palette with violin, guitar, drums, mandolin, bouzouki, organ, piano, acoustic guitar and other textures.
The album also includes rare vocal contributions for Dirty Three, including Chan Marshall of Cat Power on Great Waves and Sally Timms of The Mekons on Feral. Across the record, the band’s raw instrumental chemistry remains intact, but the writing feels more compact, weathered and quietly luminous.
