Sister opens the record at two minutes and barely above a whisper, one vocal line looped and left to carry the whole thing. You And I builds for ninety seconds and then drops the floor out into a different song entirely, which is the best moment here. Sunny's Time chops a piano into something jagged and has the nerve to leave it that way. Home runs a soul vocal over a loop that keeps circling back, and it is the warmest thing on the album. Never Come Back is the one built for the floor, a straight house beat with the piano riff riding over the top. Ravi keeps the tempo and swaps the warmth for something sharper. Cloud Song closes on soft synth and a voice processed until it turns into another instrument.

About the album.

Suddenly is the fifth Caribou album by Dan Snaith, an electronic record that moves between house, soul sampling and quiet vocal pieces, released on 28 February 2020 by City Slang in Europe and Merge in North America. It was his first as Caribou in six years, after Our Love, and he built it from roughly nine hundred draft ideas, cutting them down to twelve finished tracks. The album is about family and about how those relationships shift over time, which shows in how abruptly the songs change direction, and the side B runout carries a dedication to Zola and Liv. Snaith produced everything himself. The singles were Home, You And I and Never Come Back. Caribou followed it with Honey in 2024.
