Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children (Vinyl 2LP)

Two brothers in a studio buried in the Pentland Hills, working from degraded tape, vintage synths and the sound of half-remembered childhood television. Music Has The Right To Children arrived in April 1998 and immediately sounded like something recovered rather than made. Nothing on it is nostalgic in the obvious way. It's stranger than that, more like a memory you can't verify.

Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin had been making music together since the early 1980s, and the album pulled from work built up over years at Hexagon Sun, their own studio outside Edinburgh, across 1995 to 1997. Warp and Skam released it jointly in the UK, Matador in the US. The pieces run from one-minute fragments to six-minute drifts, and the sequencing treats both as equal, so "Kaini Industries" and "Roygbiv" carry as much weight as "Telephasic Workshop" or "Pete Standing Alone".

It has since turned up on best-of-all-time lists at Pitchfork and Mojo, and its fingerprints are on two decades of ambient and electronic music that came after. This is the Warp and Skam gatefold double LP reissue, pressed at Optimal.
