Boards Of Canada - Inferno (Vinyl 2LP)
Introit lasts half a minute and is gone. Drums and guitar land together on the first beat of Prophecy At 1420 MHz, glossy and wide open, before a synthetic voice shreds itself mid-word. Eighteen tracks in seventy minutes, and the short ones do as much work as the long ones. Chanted vocals keep rising up through the sampled speech, close to a hymn by the end of Age Of Capricorn. Sides two and three run darker, spoken fragments stacked over bass that drops straight through the floor. Deep Time holds one figure dead still, then turns, and the whole thing opens out. The last side keeps that light. Ethereal synths pile onto a slow pulse and sweep wide.

About the album.
Inferno is the fifth Boards of Canada studio album and their first in thirteen years, an electronic record that runs closer to ambient and IDM than anything the duo have released since Tomorrow's Harvest in 2013. Eighteen tracks across roughly seventy minutes, recorded at the duo's own Hexagon Sun studio in the Pentland Hills and mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios in London. Discogs credits writing and production to Mike Sandison, who is also credited with drums, percussion, guitars, bass, string instruments, synths, tapes and programming; Marcus Eoin is credited with electronics, synths, tapes, processes and sound design. Warp's own copy points to the esoteric territory of the Societas X Tape NTS mix and the darker atmosphere of Tomorrow's Harvest, extended here by a much larger role for spoken word samples. Discogs files the release under downtempo, ambient, IDM and experimental. Issued in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves, artwork and photo collage by the duo.
