About the album.

Released in 2016, Freetown Sound is the third studio album from Blood Orange, the project of Dev Hynes. Expanding beyond traditional song structures, the record blends R&B, electronic and ambient elements with spoken word and field recordings.

The album moves through themes of identity, displacement and cultural memory, using layered arrangements and guest contributions to form a collage-like structure. Tracks such as “Augustine,” “Best to You” and “Charcoal Baby” balance melody with atmosphere, allowing space and texture to carry the emotional weight.

Rather than following a fixed form, Freetown Sound unfolds as a sequence of connected moments, positioning it as one of the more distinctive alternative releases of the 2010s.
