Chamakay opens on soft guitar and a bright mallet figure with two voices circling each other, and nothing else here is that gentle. You're Not Good Enough turns the bassline up and the tempo with it, the one track built to be played loud. Uncle ACE runs on a slow house pulse with saxophone drifting over the top. It Is What It Is slows everything down and stays there for five minutes. Chosen takes almost seven, sax and a spoken monologue laid across the groove. Clipped On brings in a rap verse and scratching and is gone inside three minutes. High Street does the same on side D, then Time Will Tell closes on piano and a voice you have not heard anywhere else on the record, which is a fittingly generous way for this one to end.

About the album.

Cupid Deluxe is Devonté Hynes' second album as Blood Orange, an R&B record shot through with new wave, synth-pop, and late-night funk, released on 18 November 2013 by Domino. Hynes wrote and produced it himself, recording in New York from 2011 to 2013, then handed it to Jimmy Douglass to mix at The Magic Mix Room in Miami. The album is built around guest voices rather than Hynes alone, with Caroline Polachek, Samantha Urbani, David Longstreth, Despot, Skepta, and Tawiah appearing across its eleven tracks. Always Let U Down is a reworking of Mansun's I Can Only Disappoint U. It followed Coastal Grooves from 2011 and arrived while Hynes was writing and producing for Solange, Sky Ferreira and others, which is audible in how much of the record is arranged around other people's performances. Matt Colton mastered Cupid Deluxe at Alchemy.
