'Isabel' opens on a soft keyboard figure and glockenspiel, Dury half-talking the verse while a sweet female voice answers him. That push and pull runs through the whole record: his deadpan murmur, her melody. 'Claire' rides a loose, rubbery bassline and never hurries. 'Leak At The Disco' is the long one, a slow strut stretched past five minutes. On 'Hotel In Brixton' her voice moves to the front and everything softens. Low-key London pop, funny and sad in the same breath. 'Trophies' closes on glockenspiel, xylophone and a shuffle of percussion. Small, bright, gone.

About the album.
Happy Soup is the third studio album from Baxter Dury, a wry indie pop record first released in August 2011 on Regal, his first album for a major label. Dury, the son of Ian Dury, appeared as a boy on the cover of his father's New Boots and Panties!!, and had previously released Len Parrot's Memorial Lift (2002) and Floor Show (2005). He followed Happy Soup with It's A Pleasure (2014), Prince Of Tears (2017), The Night Chancers (2020), I Thought I Was Better Than You (2023) and Allbarone (2025). Dury produced the album himself, working with Craig Silvey on most tracks and with Cameron Craig on 'Happy Soup' and 'Trophies'. Recording began in Ibiza and continued in London, with Silvey mixing at The Garden. Madelaine Hart sings backing vocals across much of the record and co-wrote five of its ten songs, her sweet melodies set against Dury's low, conversational delivery. George Marino mastered the album. 'Claire', 'Trellic' and 'Isabel' were released as singles, and Q ranked Happy Soup at number 15 in its albums of 2011. This Parlophone reissue presents the original ten tracks on a single LP, five songs per side. Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley plays on 'Claire' and 'The Sun', a quiet link between two very different corners of British music.
