BadBadNotGood - Mid Spiral - (Vinyl 2LP)
2LP • 12" Insert
Eyes On Me opens the Chaos suite with drums and Wurlitzer locking together before anything else arrives. Weird & Wonderful pulls electric guitar and chimes into the same take and lets them tangle. The title track sits fourth on side A at four and a half minutes and is the most direct thing in the first suite. Order begins at Playgroup on side B and the whole record loosens, Juan's World running on congas and bongos more than kit. Sétima Regra and Sunday Afternoon's Dream take side C at walking pace. Growth starts on First Love with the horns forward, trumpet and trombone and bass clarinet stacked together. White Light closes side D on acoustic guitar and keys, and that is where the three suites justify being sequenced as one record.

About the album.
Mid Spiral is the sixth studio album by Toronto jazz group BadBadNotGood, a jazz and jazz-funk record released on 25 October 2024 by XL Recordings and Innovative Leisure. The trio of Alexander Sowinski on drums, Chester Hansen on bass and keys and Leland Whitty on saxophones, flute, bass clarinet and guitar recorded it across a single week at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles in February 2024, joined by Felix Fox-Pappas on keys, Kae Murphy on trumpet and trombone, Juan Carlos Medrano on percussion and Tyler Lott on guitar. The material was first issued digitally as three separate parts titled Chaos, Order and Growth, and the vinyl collects all three in sequence across seventeen tracks. It marks a return to instrumental jazz after the orchestral arrangements of Talk Memory. Travis Pavur recorded and mixed, with mastering by João Carvalho.
