"4" opens with a drum pattern moving faster than the melody sitting on top of it, and that gap is the whole record. The breakbeats are cut into single hits and rebuilt so they skitter and stutter while the synth line above stays sweet and unbothered. "Fingerbib" is the clearest case, a nursery-simple tune carried by percussion that never repeats a bar cleanly. "Cornish Acid" hands the track over to a squelching acid line and lets it run. "Goon Gumpas" pulls the drums out entirely for two minutes of strings. "Girl/Boy Song" runs a full string arrangement over programming that refuses to settle under it. "Logan-Rock Witch" closes on sampled toy percussion and a voice bent out of shape.

About the album.
Richard D. James Album is the fourth Aphex Twin album, an electronic record that pulled jungle and drum and bass rhythms into something far stranger and became an archetype of the drill and bass style. It was released through Warp Records on 4 November 1996 and runs ten tracks in a little over half an hour. The album was composed on a Macintosh computer and took longer to finish than the albums before it. It pairs fast breakbeats and intricate drum programming with lush string arrangements, ambient melodies that look back to the earlier Aphex Twin records, and heavily modulated vocals. It entered the UK Dance Albums Chart at number 7 and reached number 62 on the UK Albums Chart, and in the United States it reached number 20 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers Albums chart. By 1997, it had sold over 100,000 copies. This is the Warp reissue on 180g vinyl.
