About the album.

My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross marks the return of Anohni and the Johnsons after more than a decade away from the band name. Produced with Jimmy Hogarth, the record channels classic soul influences through a contemporary lens, drawing comparisons to Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers while remaining unmistakably Anohni.

Unlike the electronic urgency of 2016’s HOPELESSNESS, this album is organic and intimate. Recorded largely live in the studio with minimal overdubs, the performances feel immediate and human. Live instrumentation and analogue warmth create a sense of closeness, as if the band is performing in the room.

The songs confront grief, injustice and environmental collapse, yet they are delivered with vulnerability rather than spectacle. Anohni’s voice remains the emotional centrepiece, fragile, commanding and deeply human. The result is a record that feels timeless rather than trend-driven, rooted in soul tradition but firmly positioned within the modern alternative canon.

Pressed on 180gsm black vinyl, this edition preserves the warmth and dynamic range that defines the recording.
