Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 5 (Vinyl 2LP)
2LP • Gatefold
Xerrox Topia comes up out of silence and takes nine minutes to get where it's going, strings stacking until the room doubles in size. Sans Nom I and II are a melody half remembered, then half remembered again, and the second one is the better of the two. Ascent I hands straight to Ascent II and the two of them climb for thirteen minutes without ever arriving, and that withholding is the best thing on the record. Sans Repit keeps its tune whole where the earlier volumes would have sanded it to dust. Side C is the one you'll put on again, Nausicaa into Xenonym into Ada, more air between the fragments each time. Kryogen goes low and cold and refuses to move. Then Isotope spends eight minutes coming apart on purpose, and twenty years of this series go with it.

About the album.
Xerrox Vol.5 is the final volume of Carsten Nicolai's Xerrox series, an ambient and modern classical record released by NOTON in 2024. The series began in 2007 and ran for nearly two decades, built on the idea of copying source material until the copy replaces the original. This closing volume changes the method. Rather than working from samples, Nicolai composed original melodic sketches first, then applied the copying and reshaping process to his own material, drawing on his recent work with film scores and larger ensembles so certain parts were written with orchestral translation in mind. The album carries a strong sense of farewell, both to the series and to people close to him, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, a longtime collaborator and admirer of the Xerrox work who died in 2023. Twelve pieces run to just under eighty minutes across four sides. Recorded in Berlin in 2024, mixed at Studio Carsten Nicolai and mastered by Bo at Calyx.
