Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 1 (Vinyl 2LP)
2LP • Remastered • Reissue
10-22-38 Astoria runs nineteen seconds, room tone and crackle, gone before it settles. Haliod Xerrox Copy 4 comes in on granular fizz with a melody buried under hiss that never lifts. Haliod Xerrox Copy 3 (Paris) stretches past eleven minutes, one slow orchestral swell repeating until the tape noise around it starts to sound deliberate. The Astoria fragments keep cutting in between the long pieces, sub-minute bursts of static that reset the room each time. Haliod Xerrox Copy 2 (Airfrance) holds a warm loop worn down until only the shape of a tune is left. Copy 1 sits on a low hum with bell tones ringing out over the top of it. Copy 9 closes on eleven minutes of rising strings that thin into white noise and stop.

About the album.
Xerrox Vol. 1 is Carsten Nicolai's third studio album as Alva Noto, an ambient electronic record built entirely through copying. Originally issued by Raster-Noton in 2007, it opened a series conceived from the outset as five volumes, based on the digital replication of source material, in which sounds are copied from copies until they carry almost no trace of their origin. Nicolai worked with a purpose-built sample transformer, developed with Christoph Brünggel, that manipulates audio fragments beyond recognition. The source material came from everyday listening, advertising jingles, airport tones, telephone hold music and film soundtracks, altered into long-form drone and electroacoustic pieces. It marked the point where Nicolai's glitch-based minimalism opened out into something closer to cinematic and orchestral scale. Xerrox Vol.1 was followed by Vol.2 in 2009, Vol.3 in 2015, Vol.4 in 2020 and Vol.5 in 2024. This 2026 NOTON edition is a remastered reissue across two LPs.
