About the album.

About the Album What We Call Life is the fourth album from Jordan Rakei, New Zealand-born, Australia-raised, London-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter. Where his 2019 album Origin raised questions about technology and social media's interference with humanity, this record turns inward entirely. Its lyrics draw directly from Rakei's experience in therapy, where he began exploring the 'positive psychology' movement and working through long-held patterns, anxieties, and a childhood phobia of birds. The result is his most vulnerable and personal record: ten tracks merging electronic with acoustic, rugged grooves with ambient atmosphere, and neo-soul foundations with something richer and more textural than anything he'd made before. Lead single "Family", which Rakei describes as the most personal he's ever been addresses his parents' divorce during his mid-teens. Released September 2021 on Ninja Tune. This pressing is on translucent green vinyl. Artwork by Justin Tyler Close.
