The National - High Violet
2LP • 180g Black Vinyl • Gatefold Sleeve
The National amplify the tension. High Violet takes the coiled urgency of Alligator and scales it up, tighter rhythms, fuller arrangements, more decisive peaks. The dynamics widen, but the anxiety remains intact. Matt Berninger’s baritone anchors the swell, steady against the surge. The album that placed The National at the centre of modern indie.

About the album.
Released in 2010 on 4AD, High Violet is the fifth studio album from The National. The record marked a commercial and critical breakthrough, expanding the band’s reach beyond their established audience.
The album broadens the group’s dynamic range, balancing intimate passages with explosive peaks. Tracks such as “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “Terrible Love” and “Afraid of Everyone” highlight the interplay between driving percussion and layered instrumentation, while guest contributions from Justin Vernon and Sufjan Stevens add subtle texture.
Situated between the taut intensity of earlier records and the more restrained direction of later releases, High Violet stands as one of the defining indie albums of the 2010s.
