About the album.
Joy Division's second and final studio album, recorded at Britannia Row Studios in Islington, London, between 18 and 30 March 1980, and released by Factory Records on 18 July 1980, two months after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis on 18 May 1980. Produced by Martin Hannett, whose sepulchral production expanded the sonic space of the band's debut, Unknown Pleasures, further into cold, reverb-drenched territory. The album features Ian Curtis (vocals), Bernard Sumner (guitar, synthesisers), Peter Hook (bass), and Stephen Morris (drums, electronic drums). Cover art designed by Peter Saville and Martyn Atkins, with photography by Bernard Pierre Wolff, the image depicts the Appiani family tomb at the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno in Genoa, Italy. The album reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and was named NME Album of the Year. This 2015 pressing is cut from the 2007 remasters, pressed on 180g black vinyl, and replicates the original Factory Records artwork.
