Nirvana - MTV Unplugged
Live Recording • 1994 Broadcast • Acoustic Set • Single LP
Nirvana strip it back. No volume to hide behind. MTV Unplugged slows everything down, but the tension stays. Acoustic guitars, light percussion, space between notes. Cobain doesn’t push. He holds it just under. The choices matter. Not the obvious hits. Covers sit alongside originals, pulling the mood sideways. Bowie. Lead Belly. The Vaselines. It feels deliberate. Not a victory lap. Something else entirely. Quiet, but not calm.

About the album.
Released in 1994, MTV Unplugged in New York captures Nirvana performing for MTV Unplugged in November 1993, just months before the death of Kurt Cobain.
Rather than leaning on their biggest songs, the setlist moves through deeper cuts and carefully chosen covers. Tracks like About a Girl and All Apologies sit alongside reinterpretations of David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World and Lead Belly’s Where Did You Sleep Last Night. The inclusion of The Vaselines further shifts the tone away from expectation.
The performance is restrained and tightly arranged, featuring additional musicians on cello and acoustic instrumentation, giving the set a darker, more reflective weight than a typical live session.
Originally broadcast in December 1993, the album was released posthumously in November 1994. It stands as one of the band’s most defined recordings, not for its scale, but for its control.
