West took the title from Ingmar Bergman's 1966 film, and specifically from a shot in its opening credits of a child reaching toward a face on a screen that keeps shifting between two people, which set up the album's theme of the gap between how we see ourselves and how others see us. Be Kind sits closest to the minimal, improvised side of the Erased Tapes roster, while Phantom Grip pushes toward harder IDM and club rhythms, and Hidden was written after West saw Slowdive play live.
