Grohl had recorded the debut largely alone; for this follow-up, he brought in a full lineup, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear and drummer William Goldsmith, and handed production duties to Gil Norton. Things didn't go smoothly: Goldsmith's drum parts were largely re-recorded by Grohl himself, and Goldsmith left the band before the album came out. None of which is audible in the finished record. Everlong, My Hero and Monkey Wrench all became staples, and the album has never really left the conversation since.
