Dury, the son of Ian Dury, appeared as a boy on the cover of his father's New Boots and Panties!!, and had previously released Len Parrot's Memorial Lift (2002) and Floor Show (2005). He followed Happy Soup with It's A Pleasure (2014), Prince Of Tears (2017), The Night Chancers (2020), I Thought I Was Better Than You (2023) and Allbarone (2025). Dury produced the album himself, working with Craig Silvey on most tracks and with Cameron Craig on 'Happy Soup' and 'Trophies'. Recording began in Ibiza and continued in London, with Silvey mixing at The Garden. Madelaine Hart sings backing vocals across much of the record and co-wrote five of its ten songs, her sweet melodies set against Dury's low, conversational delivery. George Marino mastered the album. 'Claire', 'Trellic' and 'Isabel' were released as singles, and Q ranked Happy Soup at number 15 in its albums of 2011.
