It keeps the indie-folk foundation of her earlier work while moving further into electronica and ambient textures, and it centres on her father, Tony Bridgers, who died in 2022. Bridgers produced it alongside Tony Berg, Ethan Gruska and Jack Antonoff, with additional production from Alex G, and the sessions ran through Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Electric Lady in New York and Tamarind in Los Angeles. The cast is long and unusually broad, taking in her boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, Christian Lee Hutson, Bo Burnham, Caroline Shaw, Chris Thile and Nickel Creek, Conor Oberst, Blake Mills, Meg Duffy, session drummer Jim Keltner, and, at the heavier end, Justin K Broadrick and Mike Kinsella. Mike Mogis mixed at ARC Studios in Omaha, with Oli Jacobs mixing the closing track, and Ruairi O'Flaherty mastered at Sterling Sound, where Joe Nino-Hernes cut the lacquers. Sixteen tracks are numbered across the first three sides, with a seventeenth, \"Best Dressed\", closing side D. Both \"Lost Weekend\" and its reprise carry elements of Damien Jurado's \"The Last Great Washington State\", and the title track samples Paul Lansky. While its predecessor Selected Ambient Works 85 to 92 worked in ambient techno, this one is closer to beatless: three hours of slow synthesiser pieces that James credited to lucid dreaming and once compared to standing in a power station. Most of the tracks were left officially untitled and identified on the sleeve by abstract photographs and pie charts scaled to each track's length, which is why the fan titles coined by Greg Eden have circulated ever since. It entered the UK albums chart at number 11 and the UK dance albums chart at number one, and Pitchfork later placed it second on its list of the greatest ambient albums ever made.
